Over 200 Woodland mounds, 31 of which are effigy mounds of bears or birds can be found in the Upper Mississippi River Valley near the modern day towns of Marquette, McGregor, Iowa and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin at Effigy Mounds National Monument. Established as a National Monument in 1949, the park offers 2,526 acres of prairie and nature trails. Ranger supervised activities include, hikes to some of the mounds, talks on Native American tools and weapons and atlatl (spear) demonstrations. http://www.nps.gov/efmo/index.htm
