Cherokee Nation to Vote in February on If Freedman Blacks on Dawes Rolls Will Now Be Excluded From Tribal Membership

A petition was filed with 3000+ signatures to exclude the freedman blacks whose ancestors also appeared on the Dawes Rolls, who have previously been accepted as citizens of the Cherokee Nation. In March 2006, the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation reversed a previous decision and determined that the constitution allows for membership of the freedman blacks that were on the rolls. Now as a result of this petition it will be brought to a vote, yet again, on 10 February 2007. You can read a news article here.
